The United States should contribute more to the recovery of the world economy and stabilization of the global supply chain, rather than intensify unilateral sanctions on other countries, Chinese Foreign Affairs Ministry Spokesman Zhao Lijian said on Thursday.
Zhao made the statement at a press conference in Beijing in commenting on the International Monetary Fund's downgrading of the global growth forecast for 2022 to 3.6 percent.
"Currently, geopolitical unrest, coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic, has caused a grim economic situation and seriously affected people's livelihood and the economic and social operation of all countries. It can be said that economic recovery has become a common aspiration of the people of all countries," Zhao said.
"What I would like to emphasize hereby is that global economic recovery calls for concerted efforts of the international community. But we regretfully see that in the face of a sluggish and fragile world economy, the U.S. and a few other countries have adhered to their selfish interests and blindly intensified unilateral sanctions. Facts have already proved that sanctions cannot bring about peace, but only make the already sluggish world economy even worse. The 'big stick' of sanctions is actually hitting people of all countries. As the largest economy in the world, the U.S. should think more about the living and development rights of people around the world and do more to help in the recovery of the world economy and stability of the global supply chain," said the spokesman.
