Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Beijing on Friday (February 4), to attend the 2022 Winter Olympics and hold a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss closer cooperation amid increasing tensions with the United States.
Putin told Xi that Russia has prepared a new deal to supply China with 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas from its Far East.
Putin also said that the Russian oil business has "new solutions" on supplies of hydrocarbons to China.
Russia and China are to discuss closer gas and financial ties during Putin's trip, the Kremlin said on Wednesday (February 2), and a long-held idea for a new gas pipeline to China is being examined.
A report from Chinese state television CCTV on Friday afternoon said Putin had, like China, expressed opposition to the "politicisation" of the Games.
The Games' opening ceremony will be held later on Friday.
