On October 29, in the RA National Assembly the 12th Ordinary Session of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly started. Members of the European Parliament, the Eastern Partnership countries, Ambassadors and the representatives of the civil society take part in the work.
The RA NA President Alen Simonyan gave an address at the formal opening of the session.
Them on behalf of the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola the Vice-President of the European Parliament Younous Omarjee gave an address. He expressed his gratitude to the RA National Assembly for warm welcome and organization of the event at high level.
“Mr President, your hospitality and commitment testify to the importance that you give to the European dialogue and cooperation,” the Rapporteur underlined. According to him, the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly is more than just a platform for dialogue. “It is a bright example of our joint political will. It’s an opportunity and a platform where the European Union and its partners in Eastern Europe can jointly create their common future, founded on the principles of peace, democracy, prosperity and the respect for human rights,” Younous Omarji said. According to him, the European Parliament stands alongside the Eastern partners to build stronger, more democratic and more secure societies.
The Rapporteur welcomed and highlighted the efforts made towards peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan. It was noted that the European Parliament is committed to support that process.
The Co-President of the Euronest PA Sergey Lagodinsky referred to the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan, characterizing the peace agreement as a huge historical achievement. Regarding the European position of this issue, he stressed: “We unequivocally and committedly support this process.” The PA Co-President added: “Here in Yerevan, I smell only trust, I smell good mood, and innovative ideas, I smell cooperation and courage, and a sense of common destiny. This is what Euronest is about, a renewable future, and it is time to act together.”
He thanked the Armenian side for hospitality, spoke about the democratic aspiration of our country and underscored: “We trust your democracy, we trust your country and your government.”
On behalf of the Vice President of the Commission Kaja Kallas, the Deputy Managing Director, Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia in the European External Action Audrone Perkauskiene gave an address.
Afterwards, those who gave addresses considered the signing of the declaration between Armenia and Azerbaijan in Washington on August 8 a historical step. This has brought the region closer to stability and long-term peace. The latter noted that they support the process of normalizing relations between the parties. It was noted that Armenia is getting closer to Europe with its system of values. It was believed that in 2027, the Eastern Partnership policy should continue to prioritize the security component, increasing resistance to the spread of disinformation. The consequences of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, the importance of democratic institutions and effective cooperation between the Eastern Partnership countries in a difficult geopolitical situation were also referred to. The rapporteurs welcomed the fact that Armenia has adopted the law on the launch of the process of accession of the Republic of Armenia to the European Union.
