Azerbaijan previously had a communication route to Nakhijevan through Iranian territory. After the 2020 war, Azerbaijani forces moved closer to both the Armenian and Iranian borders. The previous route that Azerbaijan used for cargo transportation to Nakhijevan was relatively long, Iran’s Ambassador to Armenia, Mehdi Sobhani, said during a press conference, responding to a journalist’s reference to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s statement that Armenia is ready to provide a road to Azerbaijan under the same conditions as Iran.
According to the ambassador, Iran proposed that most of the new route via Iran to Nakhijevan pass through Azerbaijani territory, with the remaining section running close to the Armenia-Iran border.
"Therefore, we offered the Azerbaijani side the possibility of continuing their cargo transportation to Nakhijevan through a new checkpoint. Once the road construction is completed, Azerbaijani cargo trucks will be able to use this new route, which is 50 km long.
This route, which passes through Iranian territory, is entirely under Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Customs procedures and regulations are conducted in accordance with Iranian law, and it is strictly a transportation route," he stated.
