The second Saturday of each October since 2007 is celebrated at Stepanakert as the day of name-giving for the city. The same day was a City Day in Yerevan, Armenia, as well.
The two capitals of the two Armenian states were simultaneously celebrating their days. This year the Stepanakert Council of Elders decided the Capital Day to be moved to the 4th Saturday of September. The event was attended by Taron Margaryan, the Mayor of Yerevan. He says Stepanakert is a city of following traditions and true values.
Remaining true to each episode of its history the capital of Artsakh creates its each new day with greater inspiration. All the events of the festive day started at the heart of the city, Rebirth Square, and Stepan Shahumyan Park.
President Bako Sahakyan, accompanied by the guests and high-ranking officials, toured the city and congratulated people of Stepanakert on this sacred holiday. A wreath was lain on Stepan Shahumyan statue on behalf of the President of Artsakh.
The city authorities prepared a surprise for one of the Stepanakert streets – they renovated it and presented with a memorial. Alexander Miasnikyan (Soviet-Armenian political, military figure, philologist) bust was placed with a formal ceremony.
