US Vice President JD Vance said on Thursday that 12.5 million barrels of oil had flowed through the Strait of Hormuz following a US–Iran agreement to end nearly four months of war.
“I think the president’s peace plan in Iran is already bearing real fruits for the American people,” Vance said. “Last night, 12.5 million barrels of oil went through the Strait of Hormuz. That is a high since the beginning of the conflict.”
Three Saudi-flagged supertankers carrying about 6 million barrels were among vessels to transit the waterway after the deal took effect, according to Reuters, as commercial traffic resumed through the key chokepoint.
The agreement reopened the strait, lifted restrictions on Iranian ports and restored safe-passage assurances, though shippers said full normalization would take time due to security risks.
Vance also defended the deal, saying Iran would only benefit if it complied fully with the accord.
The agreement now enters a 60-day negotiating period toward a broader settlement.
