Reuters. A Marine Corps F-35B aircraft crashed near the runway of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, California, on Friday (July 31) in what a military spokesperson described as a "mishap."
"The pilot ejected and has been recovered," the spokesperson said, without elaborating or disclosing the condition of the pilot.
Video showed multiple vehicles on site and workers dousing the crash site with what appeared to be water or flame retardant.
The crash appeared to have sparked a grass fire in the vicinity, as the surrounding area was left blackened and charred.
It was unclear what caused the crash.
The spokesperson said "more information will be made available as the situation develops."
