Czech Transmission System Operator (CEPS), the Czech national energy operator, plans to purchase gas from Azerbaijan and hopes to conclude a long-term contract, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis said.
"Our national energy operator, CEPS, intends to purchase natural gas from Azerbaijan. The company's head is also with us today, and we will be very happy if we can conclude a long-term contract with Azerbaijan," Babis said on Monday in Gabala, Azerbaijan, while delivering a press statement alongside Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
Aliyev, for his part, emphasized that a significant portion of Baku and Prague's cooperation is related to the energy sector. Aliyev added that Azerbaijan and the Czech Republic have remained reliable partners in the energy sector for many years.
"Azerbaijani oil is exported to the Czech Republic and plays a significant role in that country's energy balance," Aliyev added.
According to him, Azerbaijani gas is currently exported to 16 countries, 10 of which are members of the European Union. Azerbaijan also exports natural gas to countries neighboring the Czech Republic.
