The 48th session of the World Heritage Committee is being held in the city of Busan, Republic of Korea, with Armenia also participating as a country elected as its member for the first time.
The Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports reports the new nomination submitted by Armenia — “Areni-1 Cave: Prehistoric Life and Winemaking in the Arpa River Valley” — has been approved for inclusion in the World Heritage Tentative List. The nomination was prepared on the basis of a Memorandum of Cooperation previously signed between the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Armenia, the Areni-1 Cave Research Foundation, and the public organization “Armenia Wine Tourism Council,” with funding provided by the public organization “Armenia Wine Tourism Council.” This is another successful example of public-private sector cooperation.
Both the newly registered nomination and all nominations registered in previous years are available on UNESCO’s website.
Thus, in addition to the 4 nominations registered in 1995 on UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List, Armenia has added 4 more as a result of consistent work over the past 3 years.
