Canadia's Prime Minister Mark Carney canceled a visa program for Turkish citizens who moved to the country after the February 2023 earthquakes.
The program, which helped up to 20,000 Turkish citizens from earthquake-hit areas to move to Canada, was initiated by Carney’s predecessor, Justin Trudeau.
However, Mark Carney said that due to changes in the country’s immigration policy, visas for earthquake victims in Turkey will not be extended.
About 10,000 Turkish citizens have voluntarily returned to their homeland from Canada in the past few years, while the remaining 9,000 will return home “mandatorily” in the coming days.
Turkish citizens in Canada whose temporary residence permits have not been extended have called on Ottawa to reconsider the decision.
