The European Union plans to introduce the 20th package of sanctions against Russia on the fourth anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. This was reported by Welt with reference to the sources.
The plans include travel restrictions and asset freezes in the EU for individuals and legal entities, with a particular focus on those responsible for the abduction and ideological re-education of Ukrainian children.
According to diplomats, the package will also include sanctions in the energy and banking sectors and the closure of loopholes that allow circumventing existing sanctions.
Brussels is also considering a ban on Russian uranium imports and sanctions against Rosatom. Currently, this decision is not supported by France and Belgium. Diplomatic sources noted that these countries could also buy the uranium needed to run their nuclear power plants from South Africa, Australia, or Canada, albeit at higher prices.
According to Welt, despite the sanctions, EU countries imported 33.5 billion euros worth of goods from Russia in 2024, and about 15 billion euros in the first half of 2025.
