Armenia continues to steadfastly maintain its constructive engagement in the process of normalizing relations with Türkiye, aiming to establish diplomatic relations, achieve the opening of the border and unblocking of all infrastructure, the Armenian Ambassador to Iran Grigor Hakobyan has said to
Tasnim.
He made the remarks in an interview with the Iranian Tasnim news agency about the latest developments in the region.
He was also asked on the normalization with Türkiye.
“Recently, we have indeed witnessed an intensification of Armenia-Türkiye contacts. These interactions are taking place at nearly all levels—between the leaders of the two countries, foreign ministers and special representatives, as well as the relevant foreign policy and sectoral authorities. Armenia continues to steadfastly maintain its constructive engagement in the normalization process, with the aim of establishing diplomatic relations, opening the border, and unblocking all infrastructure,” the ambassador said.
Ambassador Hakobyan recalled that the Armenian and Turkish special envoys for normalization met earlier this year in Armenia, during which the full implementation of the agreements already reached within the framework of the dialogue was discussed.
“These agreements include the opening of the Margara-Alican border checkpoint, as well as work on the restoration of the Gyumri-Kars railway and the Armenia-Türkiye power transmission line. From the perspective of regional interconnectivity, the reopening of the Gyumri-Kars railway is of key importance. Together with the Trump Route project, it will form a unified railway network connecting the three South Caucasus countries and neighboring regions. I am pleased to note that, just a few days ago, representatives of the relevant institutions of both countries held the second round of technical discussions on the restoration and operation of this railway, which demonstrates the ongoing and practical nature of the process,” Ambassador Hakobyan said.
According to him, Armenia is confident that the principles for unblocking infrastructure, outlined in the trilateral declaration in Washington, and the swift implementation of the “Trump Route” project will create a favorable environment, enabling the crucial next step: the establishment of diplomatic relations between Armenia and Türkiye and the full opening of infrastructure.
“Significant progress is evident in the process of normalizing relations with Türkiye, and if this momentum is maintained, it will be possible to create a new, more integrated and predictable environment in the region, which will be of exceptional importance both for Armenia and for the entire region,” concluded the Armenian ambassador in Iran.
