A joint Syrian and U.S. military patrol came under fire on Tuesday near the ancient city of Palmyra, wounding several personnel, a security source said.
The source told SANA that an armed assailant opened fire on the patrol, injuring two members of Syria’s security forces and several U.S. personnel. The attacker was killed in the incident. No details were immediately available regarding the assailant’s motive.
The incident briefly disrupted traffic on the Deir Ezzor–Damascus highway, with military aircraft activity in the area following the attack.
The source said that U.S. helicopters intervened to evacuate the wounded to the al-Tanf base following the shooting incident.
