Russia currently does not see any prerequisites for resuming political dialogue with Georgia, the Russian Foreign Ministry told the Russian outlet Izvestia.
“There are no prerequisites for resuming political dialogue between Russia and Georgia, because Tbilisi maintains the position it adopted during Saakashvili’s regime - that the restoration of diplomatic relations is linked to Russia’s renunciation of its recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. This is an unrealistic demand and is harmful to Georgia itself. Moscow has emphasized that the decisions on recognizing the statehood of these republics are irreversible,” the Russian Foreign Ministry stated.
However, according to the ministry, Russia remains open to taking steps toward further normalization of relations with Georgia, but only to the extent that Tbilisi is ready for it.
“The ball is in Georgia’s court, and in our opinion, Georgia should be more interested in this than anyone else,” the Russian Foreign Ministry added.
