Turkish Member of Parliament and member of the country’s delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Fatma Aksal, speaking to reporters in Yerevan during the 108th Rose-Roth Seminar of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, commented on Armenia’s normalization process with Türkiye and Azerbaijan.
“As you know, a new chapter is opening in relations between Armenia and Türkiye, and we are happy to see the ongoing talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia. No one benefits from conflict – peace is beneficial for all,” said the Turkish MP, who represents President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s Justice and Development Party in the Turkish parliament, when asked why the Armenian-Turkish border remains closed and how Ankara views the final outcome of peace talks.
She also mentioned Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s visit to Türkiye and noted that a real opportunity for opening the land border could arise in the coming months.
“We have flights, but Turkish Airlines doesn’t fly yet. We hope that the gates will open soon, and we will have commercial and cultural ties. This is important not only for Armenia and Türkiye but for the entire region,” she said.
The establishment of peace in the South Caucasus can become an example for the whole world, the Turkish MP added.
“You see the wars continuing in Ukraine and Gaza. But here, we can truly be a good example by establishing peace in our region and developing economic ties. Both of us will only benefit.”
Armenia and Türkiye have complementary opportunities in various sectors, and utilizing this potential could contribute to the development of both countries and the entire region, Turkish Member of Parliament and member of the country’s delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Fatma Aksal, said in Yerevan on Monday.
She made the remarks on the sidelines of the 108th Rose-Roth Seminar of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.
“Armenia has advantages in some areas, and Türkiye in others. Everyone benefits from trade. We are neighbors and we have historic ties. Armenian nationals live in Türkiye and we have good relations with them. I believe that the two countries, and the entire South Caucasus region, would only benefit from peace,” said the Turkish MP, who represents President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s Justice and Development Party in the Turkish parliament.
She underscored what she described as Türkiye’s role as a crossroad between East and West.
“Türkiye would connect Armenia with all of Europe. Armenia wants to join the EU. We are not a member of the EU, but we are a crossroad between Armenia and Europe, and this could greatly help. Besides, Armenia can become a transit point in energy, for example for gas supply,” the Turkish legislator said.
She expressed confidence that the Armenian-Turkish normalization will bring not only regional peace but also new economic cooperation opportunities.
