The President of the Republic of Armenia, Vahagn Khachaturyan, has issued a congratulatory message on the 35th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, emphasizing that this historic document has become a symbol of national will, shared goals and a new future.
The message reads:
“Dear citizens of the Republic of Armenia,
Thirty-five years ago, the course of our modern history was marked by an event of decisive importance. The Supreme Council of the Armenian SSR (Soviet Socialist Republic) adopted the Declaration of Independence of Armenia. With that decision, after a centuries-long break, the idea of our statehood was restored and the path to independence began.
The Declaration was not just a legal document. It was a symbol of national will, common goals, and a new future. It reflected the aspiration of our people to create an independent and sovereign state, which was fully confirmed by the referendum of September 21, 1991.
The Declaration is the fundamental program for the development and establishment of Armenia. It enshrines the commitment to establish democracy, the rule of law, the protection of human rights, the strengthening of the army, and the modernization of education and the economy.
Today, in the midst of the multifaceted and radical changes taking place in our country and around us, it is more important than ever to emphasize the significance of true independence and sovereignty. Independence is not only a historical achievement but also a vital necessity that shapes our statehood, ensures the free and dignified life of our people, and serves as a solid foundation for our future.
Independence is the result of our daily efforts, strategic choices, and responsibilities. It is a crucial path and choice that we must preserve, strengthen, and pass on to future generations.
The Declaration also reminds us that independence is not a gift but a daily responsibility: to strengthen the foundations of the state, to build a just and prosperous society, and to hand it down to future generations.
May our state walk steadfastly on the path of peace, security and development.”
