Armenia's Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has expressed satisfaction with the talks held with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Abu Dhabi on July 10, noting that the meeting could lead to positive developments.
Speaking about the significance of the meeting, Pashinyan said: "I was thinking today that Abu Dhabi was the first case where both sides discussed in advance, decided to meet somewhere and talk. We had a conversation in Tirana, which was presented negatively in the press, but I initiated that conversation. Later, it turned out there was interest in continuing the dialogue in more detail. I proposed reaching an agreement, we did, and we met," he said.
Regarding the choice of venue, the Prime Minister explained that both during a prior phone conversation and during the visit of the United Arab Emirates President’s envoy to Armenia, a message was conveyed from the UAE President offering to host the meeting without assuming a mediating role.
"I want to thank the President of the UAE for supporting us and organizing the meeting at a high level," Pashinyan said.
He described the conversation in Abu Dhabi as positive. "What results? I don’t think it’s appropriate to talk about that now. If there are positive results, you will see them. No specific agreements were made, but ideas were discussed, and it turned out there are several ideas that both sides view positively."
"In five days, the parties may think differently, or they may feel the attitude should become even more positive. It is not that there was a firm agreement, there was a certain understanding. I hope the dialogue will continue in this format, whether in Abu Dhabi or elsewhere," he said.
