Russian President Vladimir Putin and French President Emmanuel Macron held a phone call to discuss the escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly the confrontation between Iran and Israel, and recent U.S. strikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities, Kremlin Press office reports.
The two leaders emphasized the special responsibility that Russia and France, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, bear in maintaining global peace and security, including in the Middle East. They stressed the importance of upholding the global non-proliferation regime and respecting Iran's legitimate right to develop peaceful nuclear energy. Continued cooperation with the IAEA was also highlighted.
Both presidents agreed that the Iranian nuclear crisis and broader regional tensions should be resolved exclusively through political and diplomatic means. They agreed to maintain communication with the aim of coordinating positions.
“Regarding the situation in Ukraine, President Putin reiterated that the conflict is a direct result of Western policies, which for years have ignored Russia's security concerns, supported anti-Russian sentiment in Ukraine, and turned a blind eye to the violation of Russian speakers' rights. He also criticized the ongoing supply of advanced weaponry to Kyiv, which he said prolongs the conflict.
Putin reaffirmed Russia’s principled approach to a possible peace agreement—one that must be comprehensive, long-term, and based on addressing the root causes of the crisis and acknowledging new territorial realities. The conversation was described as substantive”, Kremlin said in a press release.
According to the statement released by the Élysée Palace, "The President of France emphasized the urgency for Iran to fulfill its obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and to fully cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), whose inspectors must be allowed to immediately resume their work. He reaffirmed his determination to seek a diplomatic solution that would allow for a sustainable and ambitious resolution of the nuclear issue, Iran’s missile program, and its role in the region."
On the issue of Ukraine, Macron reiterated France’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. "He called for the establishment of a ceasefire as soon as possible and for the launch of negotiations between Ukraine and Russia to reach a comprehensive and lasting settlement. The two presidents will continue their exchanges on this matter as well," the statement said.
