U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that CIA Director John Ratcliffe’s recent visit to Moscow was intended to establish and develop channels of communication between U.S. and Russian intelligence agencies.
According to him, such contacts could be useful in the event of a crisis or conflict.
“His visit there was largely routine in the sense that it was intended solely to establish and further develop these channels of communication between the intelligence agencies,” Rubio said.
He added that maintaining such communication channels is important for dialogue between the parties even during periods of tension.
CIA Director John Ratcliffe’s visit to Russia this week took place under conditions of heightened secrecy. The decision to send the head of U.S. intelligence to Moscow in person was made personally by U.S. President Donald Trump.
