If a referendum on Armenia becoming a member in the European Union (EU) or staying in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) were held in the near future, those in Russia would be very upset by how the population of Armenia would respond, Alen Simonyan, Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia, stated during an interview on Russian television.
"Even those people who did not vote for our party are very offended by Russia's position during the 2020 war and the events that followed, by the statements of various [Russian] journalists, public and state figures, by the statements of the Belarusian authorities," Simonyan added.
At the same time, he clarified that Armenia will make its choice.
"We will make our choice when that matter becomes real. There are currently no concrete steps towards joining the European Union. We do not want and are not preparing to leave the EAEU," Simonyan said.
Besides, he assured that Armenia’s appeal to Russia to transfer its management of Armenia’s railways to a third party is not a political move.
“We ask the Russian side to show flexibility and for these railways to operate. Otherwise, the current logic fits into the expression ‘A dog in a manger.’ If it is not possible to find a way out of the situation, Armenia may go to court, since the operation of the [country’s] railway is a matter of national security,” concluded the head of the Security Council of Armenia.
