The UN General Assembly unanimously adopted the resolution 'Education for Peace' submitted by the Republic of Armenia at its plenary session. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia reports.
The initiative stems from the strategic importance given to education by the Government of Armenia, as well as the positive and forward-looking agenda promoted by Armenia on international platforms aimed at promoting international and regional peace, promoting sustainable development and protecting human rights.
The resolution, initiated by Armenia and submitted jointly with the main co-sponsors – France, Chile, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Nepal, was co-sponsored by around 100 Member States from all UN regional groups, which testifies to the strong and broad support of the international community for Armenia’s initiative.
By adopting the resolution 'Education for Peace', the UN reaffirms its commitment to guaranteeing the right to affordable, safe, inclusive and quality education for all, paying particular attention to children affected by armed conflicts, humanitarian and other crises, including refugees. The resolution recognizes the role of education in building just, peaceful and inclusive societies and in promoting a culture of peace.
UN Member States are called upon to ensure education that is based on a culture of peace. The promotion of education is encouraged with a view to addressing the root causes of conflicts, promoting mutual trust and strengthening social solidarity.
