There is no ambiguity regarding Armenia’s movement toward the European Union; everything is clear and transparent. Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov stated this during a briefing.
“Moving toward the European Union is Armenia’s sovereign right, but this cannot and should not be done at the expense of the finances of the EAEU countries. Armenia must do this at its own expense. Everything is transparent and clear; there is no ambiguity,” Peskov said.
At the conclusion of the EAEU summit held in Astana on May 29, the leaders of the EAEU member states adopted a statement regarding Armenia’s further participation in the community, which was handed over to Armenia’s Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan.
Earlier, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov stated that a declaration by the four leaders had been adopted and would be published on the Kremlin’s website.
Russian President Vladimir Putin had also stated that Armenia should decide as soon as possible between the European Union and the EAEU, since in that case a “calm and civilized divorce” would be possible.
In response, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan reaffirmed that Armenia and Russia remain partners “connected by numerous ties,” and that the country is committed to developing mutually beneficial relations.
