Iran’s state news agency Fars has reported that gas facilities of the Islamic Republic, including those in the Persian Gulf, have once again been targeted by Israeli and U.S. attacks. According to those reports, a series of explosions occurred in the Asaluyeh industrial area, near a refinery located at the center of Iran’s gas industry.
According to Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, the facility accounts for about 50 percent of the Islamic Republic’s total petrochemical production.
According to Iran’s external broadcaster Press TV, Israel also targeted facilities belonging to the Iranian petrochemical companies Damavand and Jam, located near the South Pars gas field. This field, jointly developed by Iran and Qatar, is the largest known gas field in the world and provides about 70 percent of the Islamic Republic’s total gas supply.
Israel had also struck the South Pars gas field in mid-March.
Reuters, citing Iranian state media, also reported that the U.S. and Israel attacked a petrochemical complex in the city of Marvdasht in Iran’s Fars province on that same day. Iranian state media quoted local authorities as saying that the fire caused by the attack had been contained and that there were no reports of significant damage.
