Iran has confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that a new supreme leader will be elected “within one or two days.” Tehran has also vowed revenge.
A three-member council has been formed in Iran to govern the country until a new supreme leader is elected. Araghchi also asserted that “nothing has changed” in the country’s military capabilities.
U.S. President Donald Trump told Fox News that 48 Iranian leaders had been killed as a result of U.S. and Israeli bombings against Iran, and that the operation to remove the leadership of the Islamic Republic and destroy its armed forces is proceeding “very successfully.”
Earlier, U.S. military officials for the first time reported their losses in the war: three service members were killed, five sustained serious injuries, and several others suffered lighter injuries.
In Israel, 11 people were killed and more than 120 injured as a result of Iran’s retaliatory strikes. In Tel Aviv, 40 buildings were damaged. “Our forces are now striking the heart of Tehran with greater intensity, and in the coming days these strikes will only intensify,” said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
