The Ministry of Defense has consistently kept this painful issue in focus. For us as well, every death of a servicemember is a tragedy. You associate this with peace while forgetting to mention that in 2025 we recorded no fatalities on the line of contact with the adversary. I want to register this as a dividend of peace and a positive indicator. This was stated by Deputy Minister of Defense Arman Sargsyan during the January 19 session of the National Assembly, responding to a remark by opposition MP Taguhi Tovmasyan, who said that in peacetime in 2025, 30 servicemembers had died, 24 of them under circumstances unrelated to service. The MP was interested in whether punishment had been applied and whether the Ministry of Defense had drawn any conclusions.
“As for the fatalities that occurred in peacetime, naturally this is a matter of concern, but I also want to inform you, if you are not aware, that statistics are always presented in comparison, and in comparative terms we have a positive trend. Such incidents have always occurred in the army, and I would ask you to conduct the analysis and comparison in the overall context,” he said, adding that if the Ministry of Defense had not drawn conclusions, there would not have been a positive trend.
