Volodymyr Zelensky commented on a statement by Vladimir Putin suggesting that Russia could suspend strikes deep inside Ukraine if a presidential election were held in the country. He also addressed remarks by Donald Trump that elections should already be held in Ukraine.
Zelensky emphasized that it is not Putin who should decide when and in what format elections will be conducted. According to him, such a decision will be made exclusively by Ukrainians.
Earlier, the President stated that he is not clinging to power and is ready to go to elections once the country’s security is guaranteed, including with the assistance of partners. Zelensky noted that work is currently underway on possible formats for holding elections. He pointed out that there may be difficulties related to Ukrainians who are abroad, but efforts are being made to resolve this issue. The situation of residents of occupied territories is also complicated.
“It is also necessary to ensure that frontline servicemen, in particular, are able to exercise their right to vote,” Zelensky concluded.
