Reuters. Smoke billowed from different locations in southern Lebanon on Thursday (November 27), as Israel carried out a series of airstrikes, the Lebanese state news agency NNA said.
Israeli spokesperson Avichay Andraee said in a post on X that the IDF attacked on Thursday infrastructure belonging to Hezbollah in various areas of southern Lebanon, including launch sites and weapons depots.
The Israeli military killed Hezbollah's top military official, Haytham Ali Tabtabai, on Sunday (November 23) in a strike on the outskirts of the Lebanese capital that came despite a year-long ceasefire.
The strike was the first on the capital's southern suburbs, known for housing Hezbollah officials, in months. It came a week before Pope Leo is set to land in Lebanon on Sunday (November 30) on his first foreign trip, with many Lebanese hoping the visit could signal the country was heading towards better days.
The November 2024 ceasefire was meant to end a year of fighting between Hezbollah and the Israeli military, triggered by Hezbollah's rocket fire on Israeli posts a day after the October 7, 2023 attack by its Palestinian ally Hamas.
But Israel has kept up near-daily strikes on Lebanon since the truce, targeting what it says are Hezbollah arms depots, fighters and efforts by the group to rebuild. It has ratcheted up those strikes in recent weeks.
