Reuters. European Union enlargement is a "realistic possibility" in the coming years and Montenegro is the most advanced candidate to join the bloc, European Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos said on Tuesday (Nov. 4).
Previewing the EU's annual enlargement report, Kos told the European Parliament that Montenegro, Albania, Moldova and Ukraine have all made significant advances this year in the path toward EU membership.
Kos said Ukraine had made progress despite a Russian invasion, but said momentum had to be maintained in anti-corruption efforts.
But Kos criticised candidate countries Serbia and Georgia, saying they had seen "democratic backsliding" and that George was an EU candidate "in name only".
