Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan chaired a consultation to discuss the progress of reforms in the personal data protection system, the Office of the Prime Minister reported.
Minister of Justice Srbuhi Galyan presented details about the activities and objectives of the Personal Data Protection Agency, addressing the main issues and challenges in the field of personal data protection.
Given the existing problems and the need for reforms, a concept was presented for the establishment of a new independent authority for personal data protection, based on the improvement of existing legislation and practice. It was emphasized that the ongoing reforms will also contribute to the fulfillment of Armenia’s international commitments, including in the framework of the EU visa liberalization process.
Minister Srbuhi Galyan noted that in developing the concept, analyses of other countries’ experiences were also studied.
The officials discussed issues related to the action plan for the implementation of the concept, including needs assessment, stakeholder engagement, and the drafting of legislative packages.
The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of creating a personal data protection authority that meets international standards and ensures operational and institutional independence. He added that this body should improve the level of protection of the right to personal data, contribute to the development of professional capacities, and raise public awareness about personal data protection.
