Armenia's Parliament Speaker of Parliament Alen Simonyan expects that the Presidents of Azerbaijan and Türkiye will participate in the 8th European Political Community Summit in Yerevan in 2026.
Simonyan was asked to comment at a press briefing on a report that Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev doesn’t plan to attend the summit.
“Nevertheless, we expect that all the countries that have participated regularly will have the opportunity to visit the Republic of Armenia during this important event. I don’t think any other logic should be read into it, because it is obvious that if such a situation were to occur, the President of Azerbaijan would have either spoken about it or issued an official statement,” Simonyan said.
The Speaker stated that during a recent meeting with his Azerbaijani counterpart, they also discussed the Azerbaijani delegation’s absence from the Euronest PA event held in Armenia.
“During my meeting with my counterpart, she asked me to convey that they have no issues regarding visiting the Republic of Armenia, and their non-participation in Euronest is solely related to their relations with that organization. They do not see any problem concerning our cooperation and reciprocal visits,” the Speaker said.
Simonyan noted that the sides must be ready for Azerbaijani delegations to visit Yerevan, while Armenian delegations will visit Baku.
“Of course, there are issues that need to be discussed, particularly the matter of our prisoners and detainees, which is a significant concern. However, interactions will continue, and we will work to deepen these contacts. My understanding is that the Azerbaijani side is aligned on this approach,” Simonyan said.
Armenia has invited the leaders of Türkiye and Azerbaijan to attend the 8th Summit of the European Political Community next year in Yerevan.
