August 8 is the culmination of a long process: for already 1 year and 7 months, no serviceman has been killed or injured in Armenia-Azerbaijan border shootings. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated this at the 7th Congress of the Civil Contract Party.
“Since independence, we have never had such a 1 year and 7 months period when no soldier was killed or injured from border shootings. This is peace, or this is what peace looks like. Our political task is very simple: to ensure that this 1 year and 7 months become 2 years and 7 months, 3 years and 7 months, 4 years and 7 months, and so on, applying to all borders of the Republic of Armenia,” the Prime Minister said.
The Prime Minister recalled that it was after the previous, 6th Congress of the Civil Contract Party that he stated: “If we manage to ensure the existence of our state for two or three years, then in the coming centuries as well we will secure the existence of our state.”
“Three years after that statement, here I stand before you as the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia at the congress of the ruling party of the Republic of Armenia, in a situation when for 1 year and 7 months no soldier has been killed or injured from border shootings. The declaration of peace with Azerbaijan has been signed, the agreement on establishing peace and interstate relations has been initialed. Today we are going to adopt decisions that will predetermine the fundamental and key features of the life of the Republic of Armenia for the coming centuries,” he said.
