The issue of a corridor through the territory of Armenia has been completely removed from the agenda; it is about a transit road that will be built under the sovereignty and jurisdiction of Armenia, on the territory of that country. The implementation of this project has been entrusted to a company, which, according to the statement, will be an American-Armenian company registered in Armenia, and will operate in accordance with the legislation of that country, Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said, IRIB reports.
“The joint statement of Armenia and Azerbaijan presents the following three principles: respect for the sovereignty of the countries of the region, respect for territorial integrity, and resistance to any border changes. This fully corresponds to Iran’s position.
Of course, any foreign presence in the region, in any form, can have negative consequences for regional peace and stability. We [i.e. Iran] have constantly raised this matter with the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides and will continue to emphasize it. We are closely following the development of events. So far, our principled positions have been maintained, but the possible presence of an American company [in the region] raises concerns, and we will continue consultations on this matter.
Iran has warned against any foreign presence in the region, and stressed that such moves could jeopardize peace and stability. The possible involvement of an American company in this project raises concerns for Iran. This matter has been discussed with the parties, and the development of events is under close monitoring," Araghchi added.
