Today is World Press Freedom Day. On December 20, 1993, the UN General Assembly declared May 3 World Press Freedom Day by a special resolution.
This decision was made during the UNESCO General Conference, which in its 1991 resolution “On the Promotion of Press Freedom in the World” recognized that a free, pluralistic and independent press is an essential component of a democratic society.
World Press Freedom Day is intended to remind the international community that freedom of the press and expression of opinion are fundamental freedoms enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Freedom of speech and the press in the Republic of Armenia is enshrined in Article 27 of the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia. “Everyone has the right to freedom of expression. No one shall be compelled to hold any opinion or to change it. Everyone has the right to freedom of expression, including freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.
Freedom of the press and other means of information shall be guaranteed. The procedure for the activities and responsibilities of the means of information shall be established by law.”
