The European Parliament held a discussion titled "Unlawful detention and sham trials of Armenian hostages, including high-ranking political representatives from Nagorno-Karabakh, by Azerbaijan."
Romanian MEP Vasile Dîncu stated that the situation of Armenian political prisoners held in Baku raises serious concerns about justice, stability, and peace in the Caucasus.
"When it comes to peace and stability in the Caucasus, the European Parliament has never deviated from its principles. It has always supported Armenia’s sovereignty and independence. We have adopted several resolutions in March and October last year," he noted.
Dîncu called for sanctions against Azerbaijani officials, particularly those involved in "these judicial abuses."
"We must severely punish these officials and not encourage further abuses. The outlook is far from positive. We must act now and take concrete measures to prevent future tragedies," the MEP stressed.
According to him, the release of Armenians detained in Baku could be part of broader efforts to build a future based on mutual trust and cooperation.
