We hope that permanent peace will be established between Azerbaijan and Armenia soon: Erdogan

While returning from the NATO Summit held in Washington, the Turkish President answered the journalists' questions on the plane and spoke about the developments in the South Caucasus. Answering the question about the possible opening of the Armenia-Turkey border, Recep Erdogan emphasized.

"And why shouldn't we think in that direction? We have already told everything about it to the Armenian side. We must now set all sails towards peace. We hope that permanent peace will be established between Azerbaijan and Armenia soon. Turkey wholeheartedly supports this peace," he said.

Erdogan also announced that the opening of the so-called 'Zangezur Corridor' will be an important step on the way to strengthening and finalizing the peace treaty. "It is very important for Ilham Aliyev. Hopefully, when the railway system is launched there, Azerbaijan will be much calmer," Erdogan said and continued. "These steps will have a positive impact not only on the prosperity and peace of Azerbaijan, but also of Armenia, Turkey and other countries of the region. It is important that other countries take a similar approach and contribute to the peace process."

Erdogan added that the issue of the corridor was not discussed during the contact with the Iranian President. However, he expressed the opinion that it is strategic in nature and will benefit everyone.
