Mike Abramowitz, President of Freedom House, reflected on the impressions from his visit to Armenia and participation in annual Armenian Forum for Democracy.
“Last week, I was honored to address the second annual Armenian Forum for Democracy. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and President of Armenia, Vahagn Khachaturyan attended, a positive sign of the Armenian government's commitment to working with international partners and civil society to support Armenia's democracy.
In a panel with the Prime Minister and Vardine Grigoryan, we discussed strengthening Armenian democracy in the face of security challenges and threats to democracy, and the importance of local governance, accountability, and cross-sector collaboration for Armenia's democratic development.
I also had a very special opportunity to visit the Armenian Genocide Memorial and Armenian Genocide Museum, where we paid our respects to the victims of the Armenian Genocide and reaffirmed our commitment to expanding and defending freedom around the world. One of the most memorable parts of my visit was meeting with President Khachaturyan. We discussed democratic development and the prospects for peace in the region. I was honored and encouraged by the president's statement of his profound respect for Freedom House's work in Armenia”, Abramowitz twitted.
