Deputy Prime Minister Hambardzum Matevosyan received today David Moran, Regional Ambassador of Great Britain as the host country of the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties, and John Gallagher, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to the Republic of Armenia.
Deputy Prime Minister Matevosyan presented the actions and measures of the Republic of Armenia that has joined the global fight against climate change, and referred to the forthcoming action plan, emphasizing that for encouraging Green Recovery, the strategic plan for energy development envisages to increase the share of solar energy production to 15% by 2030. "From this point of view, one of the priorities of the Government is the promotion of a green, sustainable lifestyle, the transition to electric mobility," said the Deputy Prime Minister.
Ambassador David Moran praised Armenia's efforts that has joined the global struggle, emphasizing that the Interdepartmental Coordination Council on the implementation of the requirements and provisions of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement is one of the best examples in its format and inclusiveness.
The meeting was followed by the sitting of the Council.
Addressing the present, the Deputy Prime Minister noted that climate change is a global challenge, and no single state can face it alone, attaching importance to the combination of efforts of forces. "Armenia considers it necessary to show a united global response to the challenges of climate change, reaffirms its commitment to the transition to a low-carbon economy," Hambardzum Matevosyan stressed, assuring that the Republic of Armenia has an ambitious climate agenda and sufficient potential to move forward in that direction and to record serious results in the foreseeable future in all directions of this complex program.
The welcoming remarks of the Deputy Prime Minister, Ambassador David Moran, Minister of Environment Hakob Simidyan were followed by the discussion of the issues on the agenda. In particular, the processes taking place within the framework of international assistance under the Convention, the program "Building Armenia's national transparency framework under the Paris Agreement", the results of the "Knowledge, Attitude, Experience and Behavior" study on climate change in Armenia were presented. and fiscal decision-making were discussed. integrating climate change adaptation considerations into the process. Reference was made to the integration of climate change adaptation into the fiscal decision-making process.
Let us remind that in April 2021 the Government approved the Nationally determined contributions (NDC) for 2021-2030 stemming from the Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement, setting a number of ambitious targets, for the implementation of which the interdepartmental council coordinating these actions has an important role. Among them are the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030 compared to 1990, the increase of the share of green energy in the structure of electricity production, mass afforestation, etc. At the same time, the Government of the Republic of Armenia has adopted a policy of increasing the level of resilience of the country to the effects of climate change. To this end, the Government approved in May 2021 the National Climate Change Adaptation Plan and the list of measures for 2021-2025 aimed at identifying, addressing and revisiting changing adaptation needs by facilitating the inclusion of the adaptation component in territorial administration, local government, sectoral policy-making and financial planning processes.
