As of 13:00 today, the Azerbaijani armed forces have launched military operations in the eastern direction of the Armenian border, trying to aggravate the situation along the entire border. At the moment, battles continue, the Ministry of Defense is taking steps to stabilize the situation, referring to the reports of the Armenian Ministry of Defense, said the Secretary of the Security Council of the Republic of Armenia Armen Grigoryan in the interview with ‘Lurer’.
“Since May 12, the Azerbaijani Armed Forces have been in the sovereign territory of Armenia, violating the sovereign territory. Today's escalation is due to the use of additional armored vehicles by Azerbaijan. They also tried to use the Azerbaijani armed forces in the sovereign territory of Armenia,” Grigoryan said.
“Since the attack was on the sovereign territory of Armenia, we appeal to the Russian Federation to protect the territorial integrity of Armenia within the framework of the treaty signed between Armenia and Russia in 1997 within the framework of the logic of fulfilling mutual obligations within the framework of the agreement,” he said.
According to the Secretary of the Security Council, this is an oral application, which will have a written procedure.
“We want to inform the public and our partners that we are starting such a process. We expect the Russian Federation to provide assistance, and we will have an opportunity to restore Armenia's territorial integrity,” Armen Grigoryan said, reminding that the RA state border is a red line for the Russian Federation, and that red line has been violated by Azerbaijanis since May 12.
“In this regard, we appeal to our ally to be able to restore the territorial integrity of Armenia within the framework of our allied obligations. If it is possible to resolve this crisis through negotiations, if it is not possible to resolve it, then provide enough military assistance to Armenia so that Armenia can resolve the situation,” he said.
Armen Grigoryan noted that preparations are being made for the CSTO, too.
“Of course, with the situation created in May, we applied to the CSTO to resolve the crisis. Sufficient efforts have not been made to resolve the issue, but we will continue to work, as Armenia is now chairing the CSTO, we will take additional steps to activate the toolkit provided for in the CSTO Treaty, which allows action to be taken in the event of a breach of a member state's territorial integrity,” said the Secretary of the Security Council.
“Armenia thinks that it is possible to solve the crisis through the Russian Federation and CSTO structures, but if we cannot solve the crisis with existing structures, then Armenia will have to turn to other structures, i.e. other international partners, but we consider it a priority to launch mechanisms endowed with contractual obligations,” said the Secretary of the Security Council.
