Member of the Supreme Judicial Council of Armenia Hayk Hovhannisyan has submitted a resignation letter.
“Today, I submitted a resignation letter for the following reason:
According to my oath before the people of Armenia, since assuming this high position I have initiated and guided several projects aimed at raising the efficiency, transparency and accountability of courts and bringing it on par with the best international standards.
I am confident that the launch and implementation of these projects will raise the public trust towards the judiciary and will contribute to the improvement of Armenia’s competitive economic field and investment climate.
Unfortunately, the activity of the Supreme Judicial Council as an independent constitutional body never conformed to the experience of international judicial councils.
Simultaneously, I was committed to bringing the projects I was implementing to their logical conclusions, which is why I did not find it opportune to resign at an earlier time.
I am convinced that the judicial reforms should be implemented in an urgent and efficient manner. Meanwhile, the Council doesn’t attach importance to several ideas and programs proposed by me.
Taking it into account, today I submitted my resignation letter to the Supreme Judicial Council, urging to discuss this issue in my absence.”
