Order of Malta has close ties with Armenian kingdom of Cilicia.
Last week the Prince and Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta Fra Matthew Festing paid a state visit to Armenia. The visit had a full agenda – different ceremonies were organized at the Presidential Palace, accompanied by sightseeing, paying tribute to the memory of Genocide canonized martyrs, and other activities as well.
Sovereign Military Order of Malta has close ties with Armenian kingdom of Cilicia. The kings of Cilicia had close ties with Crusaders, among which were the covenants of Knightly Order- Order of Hospitallers.
Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem founded in the 11th century in Jerusalem settled on the island of Malta in the 13th cnetury, thus becoming Sovereign Military Order of Malta. This means Armenians already have a millennium-long history of friendship with the Order.
