Armenia is closer to the European Union than ever before, EU Enlargement Commissioner Markus Lammert said at a briefing, recalling the successful holding of the first Armenia-EU summit in Yerevan in May and progress in other areas.
“Armenia has decided to take the first step towards the EU by adopting the EU Act on its own. It was an important symbolic step. Of course, joining the EU requires a clearly defined, merit-based process. It requires a formal application from a country intending to join. We are already working to bring Armenia closer to the EU, for example in communications, trade and many other areas,” Lammert noted.
European Commission Spokesperson Paula Pinho added that this is another manifestation of the EU’s attractiveness.
“We are following this with interest. You know that President von der Leyen welcomes and supports the European integration aspirations of Armenian citizens,” the official noted.
