Reuters. NATO boss Mark Rutte called on Tuesday (July 7) for a "transatlantic defence industrial revolution" and urged defence companies to take more risks with their investments.
"The hum of machinery must become a roar," Rutte told a NATO defence industry forum in Ankara ahead of a summit of the alliance's leaders in the Turkish capital. "Industry across all of the nations represented here must be ready to take more risk. The demand is there, and you know it."
NATO leaders began unveiling arms deals worth tens of billions of dollars in Turkey on Tuesday, driving home the message that they are heeding U.S. calls to spend more to defend Europe before a summit with President Donald Trump.
Rutte said in just the last year, the alliance has seen a total of $37 billion in investments in boosting its "defence industrial base."
He added NATO expects to have the capacity to produce around 4 million artillery shells annually.
