The delegation of Armenia participated in the 11th Session of the General Assembly of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO.
In his address, Aram Hakobyan, Permanent Delegate of Armenia to UNESCO, emphasized that the safeguarding of living cultural heritage is one of the priorities of Armenia’s cultural policy. He highlighted the importance of understanding the needs of local communities and ensuring the protection of their cultural heritage.
Referring to the threats to intangible cultural heritage as a result of conflicts and displacement, the Permanent Delegate of Armenia called on UNESCO to provide greater support to the displaced and refugee communities and to contribute to the safeguarding of endangered living heritage.
Within the framework of the session, Naira Kilichyan, Head of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Division of Armenia’s Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, also delivered a statement, underscoring the importance of cooperation with non-governmental organizations in the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage.
During the session, the Armenian NGO Culture for Sustainable Development was accredited as a non-governmental organization providing advisory support to the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, in recognition of its professional expertise and experience in the field.
