The new supreme leader of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei, pardoned or commuted the sentences of 2,000 convicts in honor of the Muslim holiday of Eid-e Ghadir. This was announced on June 5 by the Ayatollah's press service.
Eid-e Ghadir is celebrated on Friday and is an important holiday for Shiites: according to their beliefs, the Prophet Muhammad handed over the leadership of the Muslim community to his son-in-law Ali.
"On the occasion of the Eid-e Ghadir holiday, Supreme Leader Mojtab Khamenei granted the request of the head of the judiciary to pardon or commute the sentences of two thousand convicts," the press service said in a Telegram channel.
On June 3, US President Donald Trump expressed confidence that Iran's supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei is participating in Tehran's negotiation process with Washington. In addition, Trump noted that he would like to meet with the Iranian leader. In his opinion, after the conflict is over, they should meet in person.
The head of the press service of the Iranian Ministry of Health, Hossein Kermanpour, said on May 18 that the injuries of Iran's supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei, sustained as a result of the bombing of the United States and Israel in March, did not mutilate his appearance. According to him, the Ayatollah suffered a leg injury, as a result of which he received "a couple of stitches."
