At a press conference after the EAEU meeting in Astana, Russian President Vladimir Putin touched upon the possible consequences of Armenia’s possible withdrawal from the union. He stated that Russia would be forced to suspend almost all economic activities related to the integration processes with Armenia if the republic continues its path towards the EU.
“For Armenia, the increase in energy prices will lead to the loss of at least 14% of its GDP.
If Armenia leaves the EAEU, it will face stricter requirements for transport carriers and an increase in railway transportation tariffs. In addition, its citizens in Russia will be subject to the usual migration requirements, they will be required to obtain visas,” the Kremlin leader said.
At the same time, the Russian President recalled that the peoples of Russia and Armenia have been connected by bonds of friendship and special relations for centuries and emphasized that any decision by Armenia to approach the European Union will not harm its humanitarian ties with Russia.
Putin assured that discussions between Russia and Armenia on its future in the EAEU will be frank and open.
“Russia would like a referendum on joining the EU or continuing participation in the EAEU to be held in Armenia as soon as possible,” the Russian President stated.
