The Wall Street Journal, citing a State Department cable, reports that the United States is inviting other countries to join a new international coalition aimed at restoring the unhindered passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the cable, the new U.S.-led coalition would share intelligence, coordinate diplomatic efforts, and ensure enforcement of sanctions.
“Collective action is necessary to demonstrate unity, resolve, and to impose significant costs on Iran for obstructing transit through the strait,” the text states.
It is expected that the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) will jointly operate the mission.
The initiative, called the Maritime Freedom Coalition (MFC), is intended to complement other measures, including efforts led by France and the United Kingdom to ensure security in the Strait of Hormuz.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on April 17 that London and Paris intend to lead a mission to ensure safe navigation in the Strait, with Rome and Berlin also contributing to the effort.
