Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has stressed the importance of diplomacy and the diplomatic service in ensuring the country’s security and normal development.
Speaking at an event dedicated to Diplomat’s Day, Pashinyan highlighted the growing role and significance of diplomacy in state development.
He noted that security has traditionally been associated primarily with the army.
“When we spoke about security, we usually first meant the army, second the army, third the army. But later we realised that the more security is associated only with the army, the more it indicates a lack of security,” Pashinyan said.
According to the prime minister, stronger security is achieved when so-called “soft factors,” including diplomacy, play a greater role.
He compared the diplomatic service to climate control in a car. “The whole purpose and significance of diplomacy is to ensure that conditions in the external environment, and consequently in the internal environment, are as favorable as possible.”
Pashinyan emphasised that effective diplomacy requires a deeper understanding of global processes and the ability to adapt to ongoing international changes.
“Development is a process of change. If there is no change, there is no development. Remaining the same as we were 20 years ago would mean stagnation,” he said, adding that progress depends on expanding knowledge and understanding.
The prime minister also noted that developments in the region often involve complex cause-and-effect relationships that are not immediately visible, but Armenia is increasingly improving its ability to assess them.
“This means we have more tools to make the environment around us more predictable and manageable,” Pashinyan said.
