Like the previous two rounds, Thursday’s talks are being held indirectly and are mediated by Oman’s Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi.
The American delegation is represented by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner.
The third round focuses on Iran’s proposals regarding its nuclear program and the lifting of sanctions against the country.
Speaking with IRNA’s correspondent in Geneva, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said the US team had met with the Omani foreign minister earlier on Thursday, before the start of negotiations with the Iranian delegation, IRNA reports.
Baqaei also noted that Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is in Geneva to attend the discussions and assist with technical aspects of the nuclear issue.
The spokesperson emphasized that Iran is serious about the negotiations and fully prepared to continue them.
“We have come here with full seriousness. Our delegation is complete and ready to continue the talks. Our frameworks are clear. From the beginning, the Iranian delegation’s negotiating guidelines have been very clear,” Baqaei said, highlighting Iran’s efforts to safeguard its right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy and achieve the removal of sanctions.
Iran and the US are engaged in nuclear negotiations as Washington has ramped up its military presence in the region near Iran’s borders and has threatened military action should the talks fail to produce a deal.
On Wednesday, before departing Tehran for Geneva, Araghchi said in an exclusive interview with India Today that “a fair, balanced, and equitable deal is achievable.”
