The work carried out by Armenia toward the return of Armenians held in Azerbaijan will continue until the last Armenian returns to the Republic of Armenia, Speaker of the National Assembly Alen Simonyan said at a briefing with journalists.
Responding to a question on how he interprets Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s statement that Azerbaijan does not intend to return the Armenians held in its custody, Simonyan stressed that the efforts will not stop.
He also referred to Aliyev’s remarks that a peace treaty would be signed only if the Armenian Constitution is amended.
“I have not seen that interview and cannot comment on it, because I am not ready to comment on such an important interview in one sentence or based on a quote,” Simonyan said.
The Speaker noted that the process and the approach Armenia is implementing in its work with Azerbaijan are complicated and difficult, but create an opportunity to move forward.
“We should not give up on it. That is what we are doing. Everyone will return. Not today, not tomorrow, but everyone will return,” he said.
Simonyan added that in the past there were nearly 200 people, there were people whose return seemed unlikely, yet, through consistent efforts, they were brought back to Armenia.
“That work will not stop until the last Armenian returns to the Republic of Armenia,” he emphasized.
