The 20th session of the Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict was held on December 4 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. Armenia, serving as a member of the Committee, was elected Vice-Chair of the session.
During the meeting, the Committee adopted a decision summarizing the program implemented with international assistance granted to Armenia for preparing the application dossier to request enhanced protection status for the heritage ensemble “Tatev and Tatevi Mets Anapat Monastic Complexes and the Vorotan River Gorge.”
In his remarks, Armenia’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO, Ambassador Aram Hakobyan, expressed gratitude to the Committee for the international assistance provided and thanked the Secretariat for its close and effective cooperation. He reviewed the work completed within the framework of the assistance program and noted that Armenia has officially submitted to the Secretariat its application for including the Tatev and Tatevi Mets Anapat monastic complexes on UNESCO’s List of Cultural Property under Enhanced Protection.
The session also examined the report of the Secretariat of the 1999 Second Protocol to the 1954 Hague Convention, the progress of projects implemented under the international assistance mechanism, and newly submitted applications. Based on submissions from member states, the Committee granted enhanced protection status to several cultural properties.
